What is GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when intraocular pressure inside your eye increases. This happens when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye.

Types

Glaucoma is generally of two types:

Primary Open Angle Glaucoma:It develops mostly in aged people. It is asymptomatic in early stage. Patients do not understand about the field defects until it is very advanced.

Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma:It presents with sudden, painful loss of vision, coloured haloes, nausea and vomiting. Are you having any of the above symptoms? Then you should consult a glaucoma specialist immediately. It is an urgent condition and can result in permanent vision loss. Factors that can precipitate an attack of acute angle closure glaucoma are: dimly lit room (as it dilates the pupil), specific medications like antidepressants, uveitis, hereditary, advanced cataract.

  • Include fruits, zinc, vitamin c, and green vegetables in your daily diet
  • Avoid smoking and caffeine
  • Use prescribed eye drops timely for best results
  • Routine glaucoma evaluation should be done at least twice a year for the people with high-risk factors
